Truthfully, some people get dogs for unhealthy reasons, and there seems to be a disturbing trend of single women (probably men as well, but I suspect fewer) who expect their relationships with humans to be as simple and one-sided as a relationship with a dog. Relationships with people are difficult, complex, hard work, and often disappointing. Having a dog, by itself, does not mean you aren't capable of (or interested in) developing complex relationships; But ... I have to admit ... it is a red flag. This guy was a jerk for making the assumption without attempting to know you on a personal level, but lambasting him doesn't change the fact that most single men think about this issue and have their own (sometimes unspoken) opinions. It's about what kind of folks tend to obsess over and treat their animals like "people". Of course if all someone can handle in the way of "relationships", is a simple, undemanding critter that can't talk or complain, then what's that say about their potential for more complicated things (like relationships with human beings)? BTW, clinical Narcissists famously don't "do" emotional intimacy (their ego and self-esteem aren't strong enough to let anyone "in"). So a close relationship with their pet is usually a much safer alternative for them. It isn’t about liking animals or not.
